La Verkin History
This small little Washington County town just 2 miles northeast of Hurricane and about 20 miles from St. George it's known for its beautiful location and trees. Its history dates back to 1888 when Thomas Judd and Thomas Cottam both out of St. George Utah, considered the feasibility of collecting water from the Rio Virgen River onto the La Verkin bench. In 1889, La Verkin Fruit and Nursery Company was incorporated, and work on the canal commenced. By 1891, multiple orchards and vineyards were planted along the river and the first families moved into the area in 1900. The population continued to grow but by 1930, the town was only home to 236 residents. Needless to say, it has slowly increased over the decades to the 4300 residents it has now.
